First Day of School: September 3

Mr. Derrick Hopkins is an educator with more than 25 years of experience working with students from elementary through high school. He holds both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Elementary Education, as well as a Master of Science in Special Education. He is certified in PreK–8 English, PreK–8 Mathematics, and Special Education (All Grades).
Throughout his career, Mr. Hopkins has taught a wide range of subjects and grade levels, including English, mathematics, science, and theatre. His experience has also extended beyond his own classroom. He has served as an English Language Arts Coach and Facilitator, providing professional development to educators across seven school districts, and has worked with the New York State Education Department on state assessments and curriculum initiatives. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at SUNY Plattsburgh, where he taught Introduction to Acting.
Mr. Hopkins believes that students are most successful when they feel supported, challenged, and valued as individuals. His approach to teaching emphasizes engaging instruction, strong relationships, creativity, and providing students with the tools and supports they need to become increasingly confident and independent learners.
Theatre and the performing arts have played an important role throughout Mr. Hopkins' professional life. He is a member of Actors' Equity Association and has worked as an actor, director, producer, and theatre educator. During his years at Willsboro Central School, he developed an extensive theatre program that provided students with opportunities to experience theatre both in the classroom and on the stage. In 2014, his program was recognized with the Heart of the Arts Award from Section VII of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).
In 2017, Mr. Hopkins founded Artistry Community Theatre, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating theatrical opportunities in the North Country. As its founder, he has helped guide the organization from its original mission and bylaws through fundraising, production, community outreach, and the development of its theatrical seasons.
Whether in a classroom or a theatre, Mr. Hopkins believes in creating spaces where people can discover their strengths, find their voice, take meaningful risks, and be proud of what they accomplish.
